The Gazi Husrev Bey Library in Sarajevo is the first library whose year of foundation is known. However, no madrasa could have worked without a library, because its pupils had to copy the necessary textbooks for themselves, and they could do that in the first place from the books in the school.
The old library building was destroyed during the war 1992-1995 and new building is coming up by financial donation from the Emir of Qatar.

Gazi Husrev-begova biblioteka osnovana je 1537.godine u Sarajevu i predstavljala je najznačajniju ustanovu ove vrste na Balkanu tokom cijelog osmanskog perioda. Fond Gazi Husrevbegove biblioteke broji oko osamdeset hiljada svezaka knjiga, naslova časopisa i dokumenata na orijentalnim, bosanskom i nekim evropskim jezicima.

Islamska zajednica u BiH uz pomoć razlièitih institucija i pojedinaca, osigurala je prostor i projekat za gradnju nove zgrade biblioteke. Novac za gradnju obezbijedio je emir države Katar Hamed bin Halifa.
